Part 1

Black Women Writers @ Work[shop]

Using Claudia Tate’s seminal anthology, “Black Women Writers at Work,” we will create a space for craft discussions and community for Black women writers. The first portion of the book, will journey us through the life and work of Claudia Tate, Maya Angelou, Toni Cade Bambara and Gwendolyn Brooks. The last two sessions will be reserved for workshopping your writing, if you so choose. You must pay in full to hold your spot.

This is part one of a four part series.

This workshop is led by Minda Honey.

“From day one, I could feel the diligence and care Minda Honey put into designing ‘Black Women Writers at Work[shop].’ What a gift to read, think, and write with the legacy of our foremothers alongside other Black women writers. Between Minda’s curated blend of readings and multimedia resources and skilled facilitation and writing prompts, I was able to deepen my relationship to my most beloved Black women writers and myself as a writer.”

The Writers

To allow enough time for a deep dive into each writer and her place in the ecosystem of Black women writers and our culture at-large, the anthology will be spread out across four parts. The first part of this course will cover Claudia Tate, Maya Angelou, Toni Cade Bambara and Gwendolyn Brooks. You will read writing by the featured writer, writers whose work is in conversation with her work and video clips and podcasts will also make appearances on the syllabi.

The Prompts

Each week, you will receive writing prompts that will take you deeper into the work of that week's assigned writer, as well as, writing prompts that will encourage you to consider who you are as a writer.

The Work

Over the course of our time together, you will have the opportunity to share brief written insights and responses to prompts. The last two classes of the six-week session will be reserved for workshopping a longer piece of your writing to receive feedback from your peers and the instructor. Workshopping is optional.
